World War I

Any book tagged with this topic is either about World War I directly or focuses on a subject in the same time period and which, as a result, was heavily affected by the war. World War I, or the Great War, lasted from 1914 to 1918 and involved most of the world's most economically powerful nations. It began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and throughout its four year span more than nine million soldiers and seven million civilians were killed. It is represented by the use of trench warfare, chemical weapons, and the utter decimation of young men, known as the Lost Generation.
